Meet the CDCR K‑9s: Kona, Nala sniff out narcotics

Kona, a young CDCR K-9 at California State Prison (CSP) Los Angeles County, is learning the ropes of the job while veteran Nala at Ironwood discovered a buried stash in the community while assisting local police.

Every day, CDCR K-9s work alongside their handlers to help keep the institutions, staff and the public safe. From locating contraband to assisting with criminal investigations, these highly trained officers play an important role in maintaining safety across California’s institutions.

CDCR recognizes the dedication, loyalty and service of our K-9 partners. This is the fourth in a series highlighting CDCR’s K-9s and their handlers.

How they like to relax when they’re not working: After a hard day’s work, Kona enjoys lying down to feel the cold air conditioning
Officer Ferrso said: “Kona is more than a partner; he’s a trusted teammate who works hard every day to help fellow officers and to keep the community safe. His drive, loyalty and dedication make him an invaluable member of our department.”

Nala: Ironwood State Prison

Handler’s name: Correctional Officer A. Fernandez
Breed: German shepherd
Age: 6
Institution: Ironwood State Prison, Blythe
Years of service: 4 years, 6 months
If your K-9 had a theme song, it would be: “Atomic Dog” by George Clinton
How they like to relax when they’re not working: Nala loves to lounge in her crate and sleep belly up.
Memorable moment: While serving a search warrant with a local police department, K-9 Nala discovered approximately 27 pounds of narcotics buried in the ground. Another time, during a search of the prison warehouse, Nala alerted to a package containing approximately 490 grams of THC and 200 grams of tobacco.
Officer Fernandez said: “K-9 Nala is a loyal partner who loves her job. She is also a great alarm clock and reminds me daily by barking when it’s time to get up for work.”
