CDCR welcomed 168 new correctional officers May 30 as they graduated the Basic Correctional Officer Academy (BCOA). Now completing the 13-week training program, these recruits will embark on their journey as correctional officers in institutions across California.
Family, friends, and CDCR leaders gathered at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt to mark the cadets’ achievements. CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber delivered the keynote address, welcoming the new officers.

“It takes a special kind of person to wear the badge, the sacrifices and dedication of our families cannot be overstated. Our future success is dependent upon your professionalism, respect, and commitment to excellence.”
CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber
Graduates excited for their future, look back on their time at BCOA with gratitude.
“I loved the academy and waking up each morning with fellow cadets,” says graduate Timothy McQuilkin. “We were building bonds as we worked toward earning our badge. I’m excited to join the CDCR family.”
McQuilkin is one of 168 recruits from the graduating class of 4-25A, and now a second-generation correctional officer.
