Joe Dominguez, a retired vocational instructor, passed away Aug. 16, 2025. He retired in 2015 after 21 years of service.

Dominguez began his career with the department at Centinela State Prison in February 1994 as a vocational instructor in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Repair.
A month later, he transitioned to being a plumbing instructor. He then transferred to Wasco State Prison in November 1995 as a plumber III. In July 2013, he returned to Ironwood State Prison as a plumbing vocational instructor. He later retired in December 2015.
“All staff who worked with him said he was very helpful to others, very approachable and was good at his craft. As a hobby, Joe and his family were passionate about racing. Our sincerest condolences are extended to his loved ones,” according to Ironwood State Prison.
Dominguez was an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
According to his family, Dominguez was a lifelong Dodgers fan and enjoyed watching his stepsons, Matt and Marc, race stock cars at Bakersfield Speedway. He also enjoyed trips to the casino and could be found most every Tuesday playing golf with his buddies.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, a daughter, two sons, three stepsons, a brother, a sister, 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Services will be held Sept. 5. Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Peters Funeral Home, 844 E. Lerdo Highway in Shafter. Funeral immediately follows at 11 a.m.
