Jewerl Thomas, a retired correctional officer, passed away Feb. 20, 2026. He worked for the department from 1995 until 2018.

Thomas began his career with the department at San Quentin in September 1995.
In August 1996, Thomas transferred to Salinas Valley State Prison.
He remained at the institution until he retired in August 2018.
“When he retired, he left behind a legacy of professionalism and friendship,” according to the institution. “The staff at Salinas Valley State Prison extends their heartfelt condolences to his family.”
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., March 27, at the Sterling and Smith Funeral Home, 1103 E St., Fresno.
