John Padgett, a retired plumber II, passed away Aug. 21, 2025. A California native, Padgett was a veteran of the Vietnam war and worked for the department for more than a dozen years.

Padgett began his career with the department as a plumber at Salinas Valley State Prison in February 2001. A few months later, he transferred to Avenal State Prison. He transferred to Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla in December 2005.
Lastly, he transferred to Valley State Prison in March 2012 where he remained until retiring in December 2014.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, grandchildren and siblings.
“John will be remembered for his loyalty to his family, friends and co-workers, his love for building motorcycles from the ground up, as well as his plumbing skills. John worked as a plumber for over 40 years,” according to his family. “He had a gentle, loving soul, and was adventurous and funny. John loved playing harmless, practical jokes on family, friends and co-workers, and always enjoyed a good laugh.”
There will be no public services.
