Puerta La Cruz camp honors 10 graduates

Puerta La Cruz graduation with a CAL FIRE leader presenting certificates.

Ten female fire crew members recently graduated the Forestry Fire Training program at the Puerta La Cruz Conservation Camp, hosted by CAL FIRE and CDCR.

The Sept. 24 ceremony marked the third graduation since the camp became a training center for CDCR. It was also the first to use the California State Fire Training Fire Fighter 1C curriculum for wildland firefighting.

The adoption of this 56-hour curriculum brings the program in line with industry standards used by CAL FIRE, the California Military Department National Guard, and the California Conservation Corps.

The curriculum equips entry-level firefighters with the skills and knowledge to:

  • identify hazards
  • properly use protective equipment
  • deploy fire shelters
  • maintain tools and equipment
  • implement progressive hose lays
  • conduct mop-up operations
  • and other essential functions.

Graduates also completed a structured physical fitness program, along with courses in:

  • Basic Wildland Fire Behavior
  • Hands-Only CPR with AED
  • and Fireline First Aid.

This milestone represents a significant step forward in preparing participants to meet the professional standards required for service in wildland firefighting, according to officials.

>> This graduation was also featured in last week’s Week in Review.
