The California Institution for Men (CIM) recently celebrated the achievements of Peer Support Specialist Program (PSSP) participants at a special certificate ceremony. The ceremony recognized the participants’ dedication to personal growth, leadership, and service to others.
During the ceremony, graduates were commended by staff and program facilitators for their commitment to change and willingness to contribute positively to the culture of the institution. The event highlighted the department’s continued efforts to support rehabilitation through education, empowerment, and peer-led engagement.
“Today’s graduates have shown what it means to lead by example,” said Warden Eric Mejia. “Their growth and dedication reflect the true spirit of rehabilitation. (They are) turning experience into purpose and giving back to their community.”

Pride and encouragement filled the room as participants received their certificates. The emotions in the room signified the beginning of new opportunities to make a difference within the walls of the institution.
PSSP equips incarcerated individuals with the skills necessary to provide emotional and practical support to their peers. Their efforts help to foster a supportive and rehabilitative environment within the institution. Through specialized training in communication, conflict resolution, and mentorship, participants learn how to assist others in navigating a variety of challenges, promoting mental wellness.
