Watch: Remembering Officer Townsend

A CDCR bagpiper plays during Officer Jonathan Townsend's memorial service in Hanford, California.

Friends, family, and coworkers gathered over the weekend to remember Correctional Officer Jonathan Townsend.

California State Prison-Corcoran Warden Edward Silva spoke about Townsend’s dedication to his career and coworkers.

“Jonathan was a valued and trusted correctional officer who dedicated 23 years of service to (CDCR). Behind the badge is his true human spirit (who) will be remembered by his partners,” he said. “As evident by all of you being here today, Jonathan was dedicated to his work right up until that moment we tragically lost him.”

“Johnny was defined by the love he gave freely and fully,” said his brother, Terry Townsend. “He loved deeply, laughed often, and made time for the people he cared about. Family was his heart and his world and he made sure they knew it every single day.”

His daughter, Britniey Moreno, also spoke.

“Dad, we’re going to miss you more than words can say. I hope you know we’ll remember your laugh, your jokes, and above all your love for us,” she said. “You may not have always been perfect
but you were ours. You filled our (lives) in such a special way.”

Warden: ‘Comfort in the memories we share’

“We are grateful for his years of service and friendship,” said Warden Silva. “He will be thought of often. Though we feel the pain of his loss deeply, let us also find comfort in the in the memories we share. Thank you all again for being here to show support to our partner, Jonathan, and for allowing me to speak in his honor.”
