California Correctional Institution (CCI) at Tehachapi hosted its second promotional ceremony for 21 non-custody and custody staff.
The employees celebrating promotions were allowed to bring family and friends as Lt. Tommy Harrison, public information officer, and Warden Brian Cates gave congratulatory speeches. Additionally, CCI’s honor guard presented the California and United States flag while Tehachapi local Elizabeth Tedie performed her rendition of the National Anthem.
At the end of the Oct. 10 ceremony, each employee received a CCI mug as well as a certificate signed by Warden Cates commemorating their new positions.

Families attend ceremony for 21 promoting staff
“Families, please embrace our employees on their new journey. Be their anchor and give them the encouragement to push through the inevitable hard days. We are all responsible for their mental health and wish to share them with you for years to come.
“These positions bear an immense responsibility; not just to themselves, but to their subordinates, supervisors and their families,” said Lt. Harrison. “This responsibility includes caring about the success of the individuals they surround themselves with, holding themselves accountable, and being the leader that they want to be led by.”
CCI plans to host quarterly promotional ceremonies.
Organizers offered a special thanks to California Correctional Supervisors Organizations for donating sergeant chevrons and lieutenant insignias for our newly promoted custody staff.
“As new leaders at CCI, you will face complex issues (and) make tough decisions. (You will also) navigate the intricacies keeping this institution running,” said Warden Cates. “Leadership is not just about giving orders or making decisions; it also includes inspiring, motivating and empowering those around you.”
