Watch: Reentry programs show success

Male Community Reentry Program, MCRP, in San Diego.
Reentry programs, such as the MCRP in San Diego, are showing promising results.

“It gave me the tools and foundation to establish a career,” said a Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) participant who is working toward an associate degree in behavioral science. The program has “given me the drive, the push, and resources to succeed.”

The MCRP and its companion Female Community Reentry Program (FCRP) provide voluntary, evidence-based programming for eligible individuals with two years or less remaining on their prison sentence. As participants progress through structured in-house programming, they become eligible for approved off-site passes to pursue employment and higher education.

Programming includes:

  • substance use disorder treatment
  • employment readiness and vocational training
  • educational opportunities
  • and connections to healthcare services and family reunification support

Community reentry programs work

A recent report shows that incarcerated men who participate in the state’s community reentry programs are 34 percent less likely to reoffend and return to prison than those who did not participate. Women are 44 percent less likely to reoffend.
