The San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (SQRC) Honor Guard paid respect to Stephen Tennell, a retired sergeant, during a Nov. 1 celebration of life.
Tennell, a longtime employee of the department who served at SQRC for more than two decades, died Sept. 8, 2025, after a lengthy career working in various areas. He retired from the institution in March 2022.
A service honoring Tennell’s life was held at Gibson Ranch Regional Park in Elverta on Saturday, Nov. 1. The San Quentin Honor Guard performed a 21-gun salute and played taps as part of the tribute to his service.

Chief Deputy Warden Rosalinda Rosalez spoke to attendees, offering sentimental reflections and presenting a token of appreciation on behalf of CDCR.
Colleagues described Tennell as a dedicated public servant whose sense of humor and camaraderie left a lasting impression.
“Tennell was known for his sarcastic comments, his loyalty to Raider Nation, and his appreciation for a good cup of coffee. Friends and staff recalled his distinctive smile and humor, both an unforgettable part of his personality,” according to SQ.
CDCR staff and SQRC colleagues attended to honor Tennell’s two-decade career and to wish his family comfort in the difficult days ahead.
