VSP hosts alarm‑response mass casualty training

Mass casualty training at Valley State Prison.

Valley State Prison’s (VSP) In-Service Training Department welcomed staff from institutions across the state to participate in its reality-based Alarm Response Mass Casualty Training.

More than 50 role players, 50 responders, and 30 instructors took part in the large-scale exercise.

Sgt. Bruce Davi expressed his appreciation for all those who helped with the training.

“It was great to see departmental staff from Custody, Health Care, Mental Health, correctional counselors, administrators, the firehouse, other institutions, and American Ambulance all come together to work as one,” Davi said.

Role-players wore orange during the mass-casualty training at Valley State Prison.

Camaraderie was strong throughout the day as staff responded collectively to multiple mock incidents designed to elevate situational awareness and reinforce readiness for real-world emergencies.

Scenarios included simulated riots, during which staff deployed inert oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray on aggressive role players, allowing responders to practice safe and effective intervention techniques. This training is conducted quarterly, with each cycle introducing increasingly complex scenarios requiring staff to make instinctive, well-coordinated decisions under pressure.

These exercises give staff the opportunity to identify areas for improvement, refine skills, and recognize the excellent work of their peers.
