DAPO hosts Visalia’s first Lifer Peer Reentry meeting

The Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO) Community Reentry Unit recently hosted the inaugural Lifer Peer Reentry Navigation Network (PRNN) meeting in Visalia.

The reentry unit held the meeting for the Hanford/Visalia Parole Office at the Employment Connection in Visalia. The Oct. 23 event brought together 14 former long-term offenders currently supervised in Tulare County to:

  • share experiences
  • learn about community resources
  • and build connections to support successful reentry.

The meeting opened with representatives from the Employment Connection. They presented programs and services available to assist participants in achieving their employment and reentry goals.

In the second portion of the meeting, participants took part in an open discussion. After introducing themselves, they then shared their personal journeys, challenges, and successes. Participants were supportive of one another, with several expressing strong emotions as they reflected on their experiences and growth.

The PRNN was established to address the unique risks and needs of individuals serving life terms, with the goal of reducing the likelihood of re-offending.

While lifers historically have a lower recidivism rate than determinate-sentenced individuals, the growing number of lifers on parole has prompted DAPO to devote additional resources to better serve this population.

The PRNN represents DAPO’s initiative to implement a model of “Lifer Responsivity,” with the goal of assisting lifers on supervision achieve long-term success.

Going forward, the PRNN meetings will take place on a monthly basis.
