The High Desert State Prison (HDSP) firehouse crew was recently dispatched on a mutual aid call to assist a 2-year-old gunshot victim.
The crew was dispatched to a private residence in the Standish area of Lassen County at 3:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025.
HDSP Engine 5210 responded with Fire Captain G. Hanna and five incarcerated firefighters. Due to the nature of the incident, HDSP acting Fire Chief B. Medvin also responded.
An advanced life support ambulance as well as a medical helicopter from Sierra Medical Services Alliance (SEMSA) were also dispatched to the incident.
HDSP Engine 5210 arrived at the scene and found the 2-year-old boy being held on the tailgate of a Lassen County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle. It appeared the child had a through-and-through gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The child was conscious and breathing but actively bleeding through his wounds. HDSP fire personnel-initiated emergency medical care.
Due to HDSP fire personnel’s life-saving measures, the bleeding was brought under control. After SEMSA Medic 3 arrived, emergency medical services personnel took over while fire personnel continued to provide support.
When acting Fire Chief Medvin arrived, a landing zone was secured for the air ambulance. Fire personnel then assisted with loading the 2-year-old into the helicopter.
SEMSA Air-1 transported the child to Renown Medical Center in Reno, NV. As of the latest update, the child is recovering from emergency surgery. The incident is being investigated by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.
