It was a community celebration as a new children’s educational center recently opened at Malibu Conservation Camp.
CDCR, in partnership with Gordon Philanthropies, celebrated the grand opening of the camp’s Outdoor Educational Center.
The center will serve as a safe, welcoming space where incarcerated women firefighters can spend meaningful time with their children.
More than 45 children and their fire camp participant mothers came together for the Jan. 15 celebration. There was a ribbon-cutting, backpacks filled with books and toys, and live music.

The program brought together Gordon Philanthropies founder Daniel L. Gordon, CDCR Warden Lavella Parker, Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, Sheriff Robert G. Luna, A New Way of Life founder Susan Burton, and Detective Chris Reza, founder of the Los Angeles Police Department Mariachis.

“The Outdoor Children’s Recreation Center is a place for families to spend meaningful time and build lasting connections with their mothers, who are participating in the Malibu Conservation Camp initiative,” said CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber. “We honor the women who are playing an essential role in fighting fires in California’s now year-round fire season. CDCR proudly supports a program that provides rehabilitation and career pathways for fire camp participants.”

“The courage of these women helps protect thousands of lives, homes, and acres across California,” said Gordon, the organization’s founder. “This center strengthens families by giving mothers the support they need to build stable, impactful relationships, reinforcing the foundation for a bright future ahead.”
Why it matters: Research shows that strong parent-child connections help reduce recidivism and support children as they navigate the challenges of having an incarcerated parent.
This space is about connection, healing, and hope.
