Mexico prison staff tour Oak Glen Conservation Camp

Corrections staff from the Queretaro State Prison in Mexico toured Oak Glen Conservation Camp to learn about California’s fire camp program.

On Monday, Feb. 9, Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) Warden Joshua Prudhel, Associate Warden SCC Camps Division Keith Petrey, Lt. William Whitley and Division of Adult Institutions-Camps Liaison Capt. Brian Sloat met with representatives of the Queretaro State Prison.

CDCR staff then led the visitors on a tour of Oak Glen Conservation Camp.

Queretaro State Prison is ranked as a leader for respecting human rights and ranking first nationally in 2018 and 2019. The Queretaro system focuses on strong inter-institutional collaboration and rehabilitation.

The tour is the second phase of the Mexico prison mirroring CDCR’s incarcerated person firefighting program.

Following an initial meeting, SCC administration and DAI-Camps Liaison Capt. Sloat organized a tour of the Oak Glen camp in Yucaipa.

The tour was provided the representatives with an onsite look into one of the CDCR’s conservation camps.

At the camp, they observed a productive rehabilitative atmosphere where incarcerated persons serve their sentence and learn new skills to contribute to their community all while earning favorable wages.

The visiting officials learning about camp operations and how the camps benefit the state of California and its communities.

Incarcerated fire and support crews earn reputable credentials and training during their assignments while at camp. This helps them prove their competitive skillset to gain employment upon their release with state agencies such as CalFIRE.
