Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) is investigating two separate attacks on correctional officers Sept. 1.
In the first incident, at approximately 1:50 p.m., staff were escorting an incarcerated person back to his assigned cell when he repeatedly attempted to use his body weight to impede the escort. Four officers were injured during the incident, with one transported to an outside medical facility for treatment, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.
The incarcerated person was placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by SVSP’s Investigative Services Unit.
In the second incident, at approximately 7:30 p.m., as staff were escorting an incarcerated person from his assigned cell in restricted housing to the Triage and Treatment Area for a medical evaluation, the incarcerated person attacked an officer using his waist restraints as a weapon. Staff immediately quelled his actions. The officer was transported to an outside medical facility for a higher level of care, where it was determined he sustained a concussion.
The incarcerated person was returned to restricted housing pending further investigation.
All officers are expected to make a full recovery.
