John Teixeira, retired associate warden

John Teixeira, a retired associate warden from Avenal State Prison, passed away Aug. 26, 2026. He worked for the department for 27 years.

Teixeira began his career with the department in January 1975 as a correctional counselor at California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo. Throughout his career, he served in several leadership positions before joining Avenal State Prison as a correctional captain in September 1987.

In 1995, he was promoted to correctional administrator, retiring in September 1997. A month later, he returned as a retired annuitant. He served as an associate warden at Avenal State Prison from October 1997 through June 2002.

A graveside service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Atascadero District Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road in Atascadero.

“Please keep Teixeira’s family, friends and former colleagues in your thoughts during this difficult time,” Avenal State Prison officials wrote.
