CALIPATRIA – Calipatria State Prison (CAL) officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide.
At about 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, staff discovered inmate Aaron Glynn, 36, unresponsive on the Facility B recreation yard. Staff immediately began lifesaving measures, and Glynn was transported to the CAL medical facility with stab wounds to the abdomen, chest and neck. He was pronounced deceased at 3:27 p.m.
Officials have identified inmates Charles DeMar, 43, and Bryan Cook, 42, as the suspects. Both have been placed in CAL’s Administrative Segregation Unit as the incident is investigated. The Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
No staff members were injured in the attack. One inmate-manufactured weapon was recovered at the scene, and Cook was treated for minor injuries to his hands.
Glynn was received into California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) custody on Sept. 27, 2011, from Tehama County to serve 25 years to life with the possibility of parole for vehicle theft (third striker).
Demar was received by CDCR on June 3, 2013, from Sacramento County to serve 81 years to life with the possibility of parole for manufacture of a controlled substance, transport/import of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance for sale (third striker). Cook was received by CDCR on Aug. 5, 2016, from San Joaquin County to serve 16 years to life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder.
Calipatria State Prison opened in 1992. The prison houses about 3,700 minimum- and maximum-security inmates. The prison offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs more than 1,000 people.
