Visiting Status
California Institution for Women (CIW)
Last Updated: 7:13am (PDT) 04/16/2026
Update
On Sunday, April 5th, CIW Visiting will be hosting an EASTER Event. There will be egg hunting, coloring, crafting, baskets for small children and a RAFFLE.
Effective immediately, the dollar amount allowed into the institution is $100 for each adult visitor
and $50 for each minor visitor. The requirement remains that the money will be in coins or
one-dollar bills only.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Southern California region has unpredictable weather; during excessive heat days, the CIW encourages visitors to stay hydrated throughout the day and drink water often, not just when thirsty. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends wearing light, looser-fitting clothing. However, there will be NO Exceptions to CDCR’s existing proper attire policies. Most notably, the following attire will not be permitted: strapless, spaghetti strap, halter, bare midriff, sheer/transparent clothing, skirts, dresses, or shorts that expose more than two inches above the knee. CDCR Visiting Attire Restrictions can be accessed at https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/visitors/attire-restrictions/.
It is also important to prepare for sun exposure, wear an adequate amount of sunscreen to prevent and/or protect you from sunburns as you may be assigned to an outdoor table. Login to The Weather Channel at https://weather.com for the most current local weather condition and/or reports.
During colder and rainy weather, remember to dress accordingly as you may be seated in an outdoor area and wear the proper footwear to avoid slips and/or falls. No excessive layering of clothing and no exceptions to CDCR’s existing proper attire policies. No umbrellas are permitted to be brought in. When navigating sidewalks and parking lots, keep your hands free as much as possible to help you maintain balance. Walk on designated pathways and sidewalks. Keep a slower walking pace, avoid quick changes of direction, and no running. If you spot an area that is slippery, promptly inform the Visiting staff.
During inclement weather, we encourage families to book appointments early in the morning when the weather is more favorable. Indoor space/capacity is limited. If an institution must cancel visiting due to conditions such as weather or an Institutional Modified Program, those with an appointment will receive a notice through the Visitation Scheduling Application (VSA). If you plan on participating in a walk-in visit, you may contact the institution beforehand.

There are restrictions on what you may wear to a CDCR Institution. In general, there are four rules to remember:
1. Do not wear clothing that resembles the clothing that prisoners wear.
2. Do not wear clothing that resembles what custodial staff wear.
3. Dress conservatively and modestly (i.e., layered outfits).
4. Do not wear any item that cannot be taken off and will not clear a metal detector (such as an underwire bra or clothing with metal buttons). There are specific restrictions:
- No strapless, halter, bare midriff, sheer, transparent clothing, plain white or gray t-shirts, no camouflage of any color is allowed, no attire with a bandana pattern of any color. No hooded clothing (“hoodies” sweatshirt/blouse/shirt/top).
- No skirts, dresses, or shorts that expose more than two inches above the knee front or back.
- No clothing that exposes the breast, genitalia, or buttocks area. If clothing exposes any skin, you will be asked to change, refused entry or terminated.
- No very tight, form-fitting attire.
- No wigs, hairpieces, extensions, or other headpieces except for medical reasons and with prior approval (and will be subject to search).

CDCR Visiting Attire Restrictions can be accessed at https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/visitors/attire-restrictions/
Visiting processing may require the removal of piercings, jewelry, and accessories for closer inspection or separate processing. Jewelry/piercings/accessories often alarm metal detectors and may delay or even prevent your visit. If you are wearing excess jewelry, you may be instructed to return it to your vehicle.
