DRP Programs
Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment (ISUDT)–Overview
On January 21, 2020, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) implemented ISUDT. ISUDT is a comprehensive and evidence-based cross-divisional program with pathways to treatment through DRP Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI) programs referred to as:
CBI-Intensive Outpatient (Medical Classification T1, SOMS assignment code ISI) 2-hours/day, 5-days/week, 52-weeks completion
CBI-Outpatient (Medical Classification T2, SOMS assignment code ISO) 2-hours/day, 3-days/week, 14-weeks completion
CBI-Life Skills (Medical Classification T3, SOMS assignment code CB2) 2-hours/day, 3-days/week, 29-weeks completion
All participants will be assessed by medical and referred to one of the CBI classes.
Tehachapi, the home of California Correctional Institution is 4,000 feet in elevation and located between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. There’s plenty to do in and around Tehachapi including the Tehachapi Loop, a scenic 0.73 mile long loop on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass and the Tehachapi Mountains. Here’s an interesting way to see the area, strapped to a glider. There are several glider services in and around the community. Nestled in scenic mountain valleys, historic Tehachapi has plenty to offer everyone.
CCI was originally opened in 1933, housing incarcerated women. In July 1952 an earthquake closed the facility. In 1954 CCI reopened as a male institution. In 1985 and 1986, the state built two new maximum-security facilities that were considered state of the art at the time. The following year, the prison added a new high-medium custody facility. In September 2021 the original minimum facility was deactivated, no longer housing incarcerated people due to a minimum custody population decline throughout the state.
Brian Cates was appointed as Warden at California Correctional Institution (CCI) in Tehachapi in September 2021.
In 1997, he began his career as a Correctional Officer at the CCI. In 2003, he promoted to Correctional Counselor I at CCI, and later laterally transferred to Wasco State Prison (WSP).
In 2006, he accepted a promotion to Correctional Counselor II – Specialist at WSP. In 2007, he laterally transferred to CDCR Southern Reception Center and Clinic.
In 2009, he promoted to Correctional Counselor III at North Kern State Prison (NKSP). In 2013, Mr. Cates promoted to Correctional Administrator at NKSP. He promoted to chief deputy warden at CCI in 2018.
Bob Edwards is a Board Certified Health Care Executive (FACHE) with a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (BS). He has served in the Chief Executive Officer role for more than 30 years in large, medium and small hospitals. During his CEO tenure he has built strong teams to accomplish Healthcare Excellence and recognition (Top 100 Hospitals in the USA {2 Hospitals}; Top Performer The Joint Commission; Missouri Quality Award {Malcolm Baldrige metrics}; and a Health system international award for Gallup Employee Engagement).
Mr. Edwards became CCI’s CEO of CCHCS on March 7, 2022. He most recently worked as the CEO of CCHCS at SATF from April 2020 till he took the job at CCI; he also worked as the CEO of CHCF.
Local Inmate Family Councils (IFC’s) are a gathering of family and friends of the incarcerated who meet regularly with Wardens to support visiting since keeping strong family connections with loved ones is a powerful rehabilitative tool. These IFC’s promote visiting by clarifying rules and regulations as well as discussing health, education, vocational training, packages, books, and related issues.
