Task Statements:
1. Perform under close supervision, within a laboratory, office, or field setting a variety of the less difficult and responsible professional chemistry work.
2. Follow detailed instructions and specific procedures while performing chemical, physical, or biological analyses.
3. Prepare standard and reagent solutions and samples for analysis.
4. Prepare and conduct less difficult surveys, investigations, inspections, and studies.
5. Draft preliminary reports and routine correspondence for approval by supervisor or senior staff.
6. Perform basic maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
7. Perform quality control and assurance checks and maintenance of equipment and laboratory instrumentation.
8. Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemical and biological materials through application of approved and appropriate laboratory safety, fire, and sanitation practices.
9. Check and/or calibrate equipment used by field staff to help gather accurate and precise data.
10. Perform and document quality control and quality assurance checks to validate the accuracy and precision of measurements as required by laboratory-specific operating procedures or by analysis methods approved by regulatory agencies.
11. Prepare data for court cases and serve as a technical witness.
12. Prioritize work assignments and manage workload to ensure completion within established timeframes and deadlines.
13. Interact effectively with peers, supervisors, and managers, to contribute to the overall efficiency and productivity of the work unit.
14. Complete monthly paperwork, such as attendance sheets and travel claims, for timely processing.
15. Perform basic interpretation of the results of laboratory analyses to assure that they accurately reflect the state and/or the chemical content of the samples analyzed.
16. Document observations and report analytical results.
17. Maintain laboratory work area to minimize fire and safety hazards, and to provide a clean, contaminant-free environment for analysis.
18. Assist in literature searches to compile information and data from academic journals and research publications for projects and assignments.
19. Assist in collection of field samples, including sample identification, preservation, transportation and documentation, as required.
20. Assist in the proper handling and storage of samples as required by laboratory-specific standard operating procedures or by analysis methods approved by regulatory agencies.
21. Maintain detailed notes documenting laboratory observations and activities.
22. Maintain laboratory chains of custody to document sample integrity.
23. Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and prepare purchase requests.
24. Demonstrate and maintain a level of proficiency in performing assigned laboratory procedures.
25. Provide input to supervisor regarding the amount of time spent and resources required to complete assignments.
26. Maintain volatile chemical inventory.
27. Collect samples for in house and contracted testing.
28. Perform routine quality and quantitative chemical and biochemical analysis of water and wastewater by standardized and predetermined methods.
29. Review contract laboratory results for errors, out of range results, and/or over limit results which could trigger resampling or retesting.
30. Communicate with contract laboratory regarding anomalous results.
31. Review and maintain all procedures according to the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) acceptable methodologies.
32. Provide validated data reports for all permit require parameters to be included in the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) monthly Report.
33. Prepare contract paperwork for laboratory testing, outsource contracts, services and expense orders.
34. Provide ongoing training for Water and Sewage Plant Supervisors and the documentation of individual Demonstration of Capability.

K6. Basic knowledge of statistics, report writing, and research methods and procedures as required to perform basic interpretation of the results of laboratory analysis to assure that they accurately reflect the state and/or chemical content of the samples analyzed.
K7. Comprehensive knowledge of personal computers and related office software to analyze and summarize data.
K8. Basic knowledge of library and internet research and data gathering techniques to compile information for assignments.
K9. Comprehensive knowledge of research methods and procedures as required to perform analysis determining the presence/absence or the concentration of substances in a variety of sample matrices following laboratory-specific standard operating procedures or analysis methods approved by regulatory agencies.
