California Institution for Women experienced the rehabilitative power of music thanks to the Bach with Verse concert held Feb. 1.
The institution originally planned to hold the concert in the auditorium, but unexpected circumstances forced the larger venue’s cancellation. Thanks to a 15-year friendship between Richard “Dobbs” Hartshorne and Associate Warden Delinia Lewis, the show went on, held in the much cozier library.
Back to Bach and basics of storytelling
Bach with Verse is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004. For two decades, Hartshorne has performed in schools, prisons, and refugee camps across the U.S. and the world. He’s also held concerts in Afghanistan, Bolivia, Iraq, Palestine, and Uganda.
Lewis introduced Hartshorne to those gathered in the library, explaining they were going to experience an “emotional rollercoaster (leaving) them on another level of happiness.”
Settling in behind his giant Italian-made 1863 antique bass, he told the audience to keep an open mind and let the music work its magic.
“You don’t have to do anything (because) the music does all the work,” he said. “The more open you are, the bigger the experience.”
He then launched into a rendition of Bach’s Six Solo Cello Suites. Then, he played three original compositions featuring classic music set to lyrics.
“The best audiences are in places who are suffering. They need music because music makes them feel good,” said Hartshorne.
