Martel was a 36-year resident of Rancho Murieta, passing away just a few weeks shy of his 82nd birthday. According to a statement, Martel was surrounded by his wife and family when he passed away.

He began his career with the department as a correctional officer at the Correctional Training Facility at Soledad in 1966.

He worked at various prisons as well as in the Parole and Community Services Division in Los Angeles. During his career, he promoted quickly to his highest position as the Chief Deputy Warden at Mule Creek State Prison.

During his first marriage, he had three daughters, Francine, Nicole (who passed away), and La Nette.

In 1981, he met and married Pahl Schulz. The two lived in many different locations around California as Martel rose through the ranks of the department.

He enjoyed golf, camping, water skiing, scuba diving, photography, and physical fitness. Martel was also an avid reader. He most enjoyed traveling the world with his wife.

While living in Rancho Murieta, he served on the Rancho Murieta Country Club Board of Directors, as well as serving on the Rancho Murieta Men’s Golf Club Board of Directors and as Past President.

He is survived by his loving wife Pahl, and two daughters. He is also survived by brothers Leo, Matthew, Michael, and Paul along with his sister, Renée. Other family members include six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life was held April 14.
