In partnership with Gordon Philanthropies, a new library for children has been created at California Institution for Women (CIW).
The installation of the library took less than a week to complete. The Gordon Philanthropies team seamlessly created a space in which friendly giraffes watch over the kids as they read. The books available in the library have been curated to keep the children engaged as well as provide moments for them to bond with their moms.
CIW’s administration is committed to the betterment of the incarcerated women.
“This means we serve not only the women, but the families as well. Children are one of our most precious gifts, which is why we made such an effort to create this welcoming space,” according to organizers.
This project became a reality due to the leadership of Associate Warden D. Lewis and her team, who welcomed Gordon Philanthropies. The organization is also supporting book clubs for the women incarcerated at CIW.
“It is an honor to have Gordon Philanthropies provide children’s libraries across correctional institutions. The reason for the success of creating unique libraries with various children’s themes, such as Dr. Seuss, astronauts, or giraffes, is that we design the libraries with an ethos that children come first as well as a commitment to quality,” said Sylvia Beanes, Executive Director for Gordon Philanthropies. “However, none of this would be possible without the support of leaders such as Associate Warden Lewis and all the top leadership.”
