In an unprecedented event, members of the Facilities A and B incarcerated population at Correctional Training Facility (CTF) at Soledad organized a staff recognition and appreciation ceremony. This gathering aligns with the transformative goals of the California Model.
The California Model emphasizes a correctional philosophy fostering normalization, peer mentorship, trauma-informed care, and dynamic security. These principles aim to cultivate a humane, rehabilitative environment where staff and incarcerated individuals interact with mutual respect and understanding.
The ceremony at CTF was designed by the Incarcerated Advisory Committee (IAC) and the broader incarcerated population to honor staff members across various classifications. The ceremony also honored volunteers. Those being recognized have made significant contributions to creating a positive, community-like atmosphere within the facility.
This event acknowledged their hard work and dedication but also underscored the importance of dynamic security and normalization — key components of the California Model — by celebrating the staff’s efforts in fostering rehabilitation and treating incarcerated individuals with dignity.
Coleman, an incarcerated person, highlighted the profound impact of the staff’s approach.
“This event is crucial for us to show appreciation for the staff’s consistent efforts to aid our rehabilitation. They see us as human beings, not just inmates. It’s about respect and community, and that’s what motivates us to keep improving,” Coleman said.

The event featured two separate ceremonies in the Facility A/B Gym, catering to second and third watch staff. Meals were provided by a catering company funded by the incarcerated population. Awards were presented, each engraved with the message: “May you be proud of the work you do, the person you are, and the difference you make.”
Acting Warden Edward J. Borla also spoke about the significance of this event.
“Such initiatives are crucial in breaking down barriers and building positive relationships within our facilities,” he said. “They are a testament to the principles of the California Model, showcasing our commitment to rehabilitation and mutual respect.”
Associate Warden Krystle Binning also discussed the importance of this the ceremony.
“This event is not only a reflection of the positive changes within CDCR but also a beacon of what is possible when everyone in the correctional system works together towards common goals of rehabilitation and community integration,” she said. “It marks a significant step in transforming the traditional correctional environment into one that supports successful reintegration and reduces recidivism, embodying the very essence of the California Model’s vision for a more humane and effective correctional system.”
