Saluting National Correctional Officer Week

CDCR shoulder patch.
CDCR correctional officers help maintain public safety.

As we honor the 40th National Correctional Officer Week from May 5-11, 2024, I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you. This week serves as a reminder of the unwavering dedication and sacrifices you make daily to ensure public safety and uphold justice.

For decades, correctional staff have dedicated themselves to the mission of public safety and rehabilitation, while fostering relationships in the communities where our staff serve. The expertise of our correctional officers is vital to our success in maintaining the security of our facilities and preparing our new officers to be our next generation of leaders.

Many of our correctional officers go above and beyond their duty to ensure public safety by actively striving to improve the lives of the communities we serve, our fellow colleagues and the individuals within our care. You are part of a rich history of public service. As we move the department forward, we continue to build upon the foundation created by our predecessors and become a bridge to the future.

Our mission to enhance public safety and promote successful reintegration of individuals into their communities remains persistent. We strive to improve the working and living conditions for all within our facilities, fostering a culture of rehabilitation and positive change.

We are embarking on transformative initiatives, including:

  • specialized training programs aimed at enhancing employee wellness
  • increasing safety in correctional institutions and communities
  • improving professional interactions
  • and preparing employees for leadership roles.

Aligned with the California Model, these programs signify our unwavering commitment to reshaping the approach to incarceration, prioritizing rehabilitation, education, restorative justice, and community reentry.

Your tireless efforts in maintaining security, facilitating rehabilitation, and fostering positive change within the correctional system are truly remarkable. While a week may not suffice to celebrate your daily accomplishments, I urge you to take this opportunity to reflect on the profound impact you have on the lives of others.

Once again, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all correctional officers throughout California.

Your dedication and service are truly commendable.

Sincerely,
Ron Broomfield
Director, Division of Adult Institutions
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
