To learn about law enforcement careers, Law and Protective Services (LAPS) Academy students were able to tour two CDCR institutions.

The Correctional Training Facility (CTF) and Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) tour allows students to explore various careers in CDCR. This visit is part of a broader academy effort to expose students to different facets of California’s criminal justice system.

On the tour, students were guided by CDCR public information officers. The staff provided them with a look into the daily operations of these institutions. The tour included detailed presentations on various career opportunities available within the facilities.

At CTF, career options range from healthcare and education to security and administration. Similarly, SVSP offers a range of programs and initiatives aimed at rehabilitation and incarcerated population support, highlighting careers in psychological services, educational programming, and volunteer management.

Acting Warden Edward J. Borla said these visits are important.

“It’s essential for young individuals interested in law enforcement careers to understand the variety of roles that contribute to the functioning of correctional institutions,” he said. “We are proud to facilitate these learning opportunities and inspire the next generation of law enforcement professionals.”

The institutions emphasized their extensive rehabilitative programs, which include educational and vocational training, substance abuse treatment, and various self-help groups designed to aid in the rehabilitation of inmates and reduce recidivism. These programs are critical components of the institutions’ efforts to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society.

The LAPS Academy students’ visits to CTF and SVSP are part of a larger itinerary including stops at various law enforcement agencies across the state, each offering a unique perspective on the criminal justice system.

This exposure is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the potential career paths in law enforcement, inspiring them to consider a future in serving their communities.
