Supporting Diversity Month in April, the RJ Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD) held the institution’s first staff Diversity Day event.

The April 10 event supported the efforts of the Government Alliance for Race and Equity (GARE).

Healthcare and custody partnered to offer all RJD staff some time to learn about different cultures and increase inclusivity.

Community partners joined in the festivities. These included donations from Chick-Fil-A, Monter Energy Drinks, mariachi band performances from Southwestern Community College, DJ music from Mendoza Entertainment, multi-faith leaders, and a Polynesian dance performance from one of RJD’s recreational therapists.

Staff volunteered their time to plan and decorate booths, as well as volunteering their culinary talents. Enhancing awareness about staff’s diversity brings a wealth of perspectives, experiences, and talents to the work force, making for a stronger team.

Staff enjoyed the event and took part in playing corn hole, taking Polynesian dance lessons, and receiving spiritual healing.

Over 200 staff shared in the day’s activities and they provided positive feedback.

Booths were decorated and showcased items from India, Guam, Mexico, Iraq, Peru, and the Philippines. Multi-faith spiritual healers offered prayers for those who were interested.

The Warden and Chief Executive Officer attended the event and said they were pleased with staff involvement. Due to the positive response, plans include making Diversity Day an annual event.
