Ventura Training Center (VTC) staff embarked on a four-day trip through Central California to visit CDCR conservation camps and firehouses to discuss the training center’s reentry opportunities.
When they are paroled, formerly incarcerated firefighters have the opportunity to enroll in the Firefighter Training and Reentry Program through the Ventura Training Center.
A recruitment team of representatives from the Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO), the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), and CAL FIRE visited Mount Home, Miramonte, Mt. Bullion, Vallecito and Owens Valley Conservation Camps.
The team also visited firehouses at Sierra Conservation Center and California Correctional Institution.
The trip allowed for incarcerated firefighters to hear firsthand:
- what role all agencies play in the program
- explain the acceptance process and rigorous standards of the CAL FIRE academy
- and the mandatory programing incorporated as part of the 18-month program.
Feedback from the field indicates these visits have a significant impact.
Firefighter training makes a difference
Sierra Conservation Center Fire Chief M. Gilmore thanked staff for their efforts. He said direct communication helps everyone better understand the program’s expectations and benefits.
Success stories are emerging from the program. He said two VTC graduates from Sierra Conservation Center have secured CAL FIRE jobs. Gilmore said there is also another current participant who has received multiple job offers and plans to accept one soon.
The VTC’s initiative underscores a commitment to training incarcerated firefighters while also assisting their successful reintegration into the community. This is achieved through intensive rehabilitative services and the opportunity to obtain rewarding employment.
The continuous success stories are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the VTC staff striving to ensure the program remains the best it can be.
