Taylor Swift fans find hope while serving life sentences

Taylor Swift fans who are serving life sentences at High Desert State Prison in Susanville, California, have formed a self-help group and are shown sitting in a semi-circle inside the prison.
The High Desert State Prison self-named Lifers Group is finding hope and inspiration through the lyrics and music of Taylor Swift.

Those serving life sentences at High Desert State Prison in Susanville are finding hope and inspiration through the songs of Taylor Swift.

Calling themselves the Lifers Group, members who join are serving sentences of 25 years to life but are trying to improve themselves while also helping others.

As the Lifers Group evolved and grew, with more members voluntarily joining, rehabilitation became more of their focus.

Some members credit their rehabilitation success to music and even more so to the music of Taylor Swift.

The performer’s lyrics and music attracted the attention of other members, who quickly began referring to themselves as Swifties.

Rehabilitation inside the walls, coupled with Taylor Swift fans, soon drew the attention of a film crew who focuses on rehabilitation inside California’s institutions.

After traveling several hundred miles by plane and car, the film crew arrived at High Desert to capture the emotions, smiles, laughter, and essence of the Lifers Group.

Members were filmed during their group meeting as well as shadowed by the film crew to get a glimpse of everyday life at the prison. The format was much like a reality television show.

Filmmakers captured them speaking with friends and singing Taylor Swift lyrics to show how they relate to their issues.

Several members shared their stories during the Lifers Group and explained how their bad choices ruined the lives of others.

Some members said they found purpose by embracing the support group. They also explained how it has led them to have more understanding and take responsibility for their crimes.
