Rehabilitation and community involvement were on full display at Avenal State Prison for the Battle of the Bands and a shelter donation. Both events happened Oct. 10.

Three bands from Facility E and F competed to be crowned the Battle of the Bands champion. The stage, Facility F recreation yard, buzzed with excitement, eager to see who would claim the crown.

The first band to take the stage was 1 Kings Way. Their rock music echoed through the facility, igniting a wave of cheers.

They were followed by Esencia Musical 905. Their Latin rhythms brought a vibrant energy to the stage.

Lastly, No Dementia took the stage, performing a blend of rock and alternative.

As the judges crowned No Dementia as the champion, the crowd erupted in a roar of cheer and applause.

According to band members, the victory was sweet, especially after pouring their hearts and souls into the music.

Donating to a community cause

Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Warden A. Williams, Associate Warden D. Groves, Complex III J. Diaz, Facility E staff and the incarcerated population presented a check for over $1,100 to the Poverello House.

The charitable organization works to enrich others by providing meals, social services and temporary shelter in the community. The Facility E incarcerated population chose to donate to the Poverello House as they are a local program who gives back to those in need.

Briana Davis, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Poverello House, was grateful for the donation.

“It was so eye-opening to see the great work you guys are doing,” she said regarding the prison’s on-going partnership and donations to Poverello House.
