Centinela State Prison recently held a promotion ceremony for newly appointed Warden Fidencio Guzman and Chief Deputy Warden Andres Esquivel.
Hundreds of staff and visitors gathered to witness the recognition of both individuals. Attendees included dignitaries such as the county sheriff and district attorney, Calipatria State Prison Warden Roberto Arias, local Naval command staff and many more.
The Centinela promotion ceremony began with the institution Honor Guard displaying the presentation of colors and the National Anthem. Staff lined up in formation to show respect for their newly appointed leaders.
“Your innovation speaks volumes about your capabilities, and we are certain you will bring the same passion and perseverance to your new role,” said guest speaker Associate Warden Ernesto Bustamante.
Warden Guzman was able to swear in his newly appointed Chief Deputy Warden Esquivel.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity I was given. I hope we can continue creating a positive environment for our staff and prison population,” said Esquivel.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and unity, which was captured on a live stream making it available to all staff.
Centinela sees first new warden in decade

The last time a warden was appointed at Centinela State Prison was nearly a decade ago.
Guzman, born and raised in the Imperial Valley, is also the first person from the area to be appointed warden at either of the desert institutions: Centinela or Calipatria State Prison.
“I’ve always learned to surround myself with people who are smarter than me. This appointment is a testament to the hard work of the people who work with me, to include non-custody, health care and custody staff. Thank you all,” said Guzman.
The ceremony was capped off with pictures, food and music as everybody enjoyed the moment before getting back to work.
Future at Centinela
Under the leadership of Guzman and Esquivel, Centinela hopes to continue its high staff morale. They also look forward to creating a safe environment for its population.
Centinela is proud to serve its stakeholders and hopes to continue supporting them as they provide tools to the incarcerated population for safely reintegrating back into society.
