California Medical Facility (CMF) Warden Daniel Cueva retired after dedicating 27 years of service to the department. He started his career at CMF and ended his career in the same place, rising through the ranks all at the place he loved and community he called home.
CMF staff bid farewell to Cueva through a San Francisco Giants themed retirement party in the visiting room. The warden’s wife and daughters were in attendance along with directorates who came from various institutions and headquarters. Attendees enjoyed food, beverages, and live music performed by the Hospice Memorial Band. Many folks approached the mic to share memories of good times and even better partnerships with Warden Cueva.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. I don’t think I would be leaving if I didn’t have the team that is in place,” Cueva said. “CMF has the best team and is being left in great hands. I have no worries.”
Farewell email from Warden Cueva to staff

“It’s hard to believe this day has come. I am deeply grateful for this incredible journey.
“When I started 27 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined all the ways this job would shape me. I’ve worked with some of the most hardworking, courageous, and compassionate individuals anyone could hope for. We’ve faced moments of crisis and uncertainty, but also moments of pride and hope. I’ve also had the pleasure of witnessing moments of redemption, second chances, and transformation.
“To all of you, your commitment and zeal are the backbone of this institution. I have all the confidence that you all will continue to show and prove why CMF is the best.
“Remember to treat yourselves with care and respect. Remember that every decision you make has the power to impact lives, especially your own. Lead with integrity, listen with compassion, and act with fairness in all aspects of your life, not just your careers.
“As I step into this next chapter, I leave with a full heart. I’m excited about dedicating this new chapter of my life to my family. This line of work is demanding, often pulling our attention away at unexpected times and they stood by me through it all.
“Retirement is a chance for me to reflect and celebrate a career I’ve been privileged to have. Thank you for allowing me the honor of working alongside you. I am forever grateful for the memories we’ve shared,” Warden Cueva wrote.
