The Hawaiian spiritual group at California State Prison, Solano, gathered to hold a Makahiki celebration Dec. 23, 2024.
The Makahiki event is held in honor of Lona, the Hawaiian god of peace, rain, and agriculture.
This celebration signifies the end of the harvest period where native Hawaiians indulge in the fruits of their labor.
Solano’s Hawaiian spiritual group held a hula, sang songs of their ancestors, and shared a meal with each other as ohana (family).
Staff and incarcerated individuals were able to attend and watch the performance.
