California Institution for Men (CIM) recently honored the memory of Correctional Officer Manuel “Manny” Gonzalez, slain in the line of duty 20 years ago.

While two decades have passed since the tragic loss of Gonzalez, his legacy of service and sacrifice remains deeply embedded in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and community.

On Jan. 10, 2005, Officer Gonzalez, a dedicated member of CIM in Chino, was fatally wounded in the line of duty while working at the Reception Center Central Facility. His death was a heartbreaking reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily while upholding justice and protecting their communities.

Gonzalez, known for his unwavering commitment to his role, was a respected officer and a beloved father, husband, and friend. His tragic passing left a void in the department, but his memory has lived on through memorials over the years.

Remembering Officer Gonzalez after 20 years

Each year, fellow officers, family, friends and the community gather to honor his life, ensuring his dedication is never forgotten. The 20-year remembrance ceremony included heartfelt speeches, a moment of silence, and a wreath display.

CDCR officials emphasized how Officer Gonzalez’s sacrifice continues to inspire new generations of officers.

“He gave the ultimate sacrifice for all of us,” said Warden Travis Pennington. “His memories should never be forgotten and continue to be shared. Thank you for your service.”

His family, says the pain of his loss is ever-present, but so is the pride in the man he was. Officer Gonzalez’s memory remains a symbol of honor, service, and the enduring bond of those who wear the uniform. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“CIM thanks all uniform and non-uniform staff as well as the Chino Police department for attending. Also, thanks to the California Correctional Supervisors Organization, California Correctional Peace Officers Association, and Correctional Peace Officers Foundation. They assisted with the ceremony and for provided challenge coins, programs, food and beverages,” organizers said.
