The 2025 Lifetime Sea Otter Classic in Monterey provided a unique and engaging backdrop for CDCR recruiters.

Capitalizing on the event’s large attendance and community spirit, recruiters from nearby Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) were on-site. They actively engaged with potential candidates interested in a career as a Peace Officer.
Spearheaded by Sgt. Gustavo Segura, the SVSP recruitment team established a prominent booth at the four-day event. Held in mid-April, the event is well-attended while the booth drew considerable attention.
The location proved strategic, offering a direct line of communication with individuals from the Monterey and Salinas Valley regions.
The recruitment team provided comprehensive information about the rewarding and challenging career path of a CDCR peace officer. They detailed the essential role these officers play in maintaining safety and security within California’s correctional institutions. The team also highlighted the diverse opportunities for professional growth and specialization within the department. Recruiters answered questions about the application process, training academy, daily responsibilities, and benefits offered to CDCR employees.
Staff support dog Anna was hit with crowd

A particularly popular member of the SVSP team was Anna, the facility’s dedicated staff support dog. Anna, a calm and friendly presence, served as a conversation starter. She also served as an example of the department’s commitment to the well-being of its staff.
Her primary purpose at SVSP is to offer comfort and stress relief to employees working in the correctional facility. Attendees interacted with Anna, learning firsthand about the positive impact a support animal can have on CDCR staff.
Segura emphasized the importance of connecting with the local community, showcasing the opportunities available at SVSP.
“The Sea Otter Classic provided an excellent platform to reach a diverse group of individuals who may not have otherwise considered a career with CDCR,” he said. “We were able to share information about the vital work our peace officers do. We also highlighted the supportive environment at SVSP, including the unique support provided by Anna.”
The presence of SVSP recruiters at the Lifetime Sea Otter Classic underscores CDCR’s ongoing commitment to proactive recruitment strategies and its dedication to attracting qualified and dedicated individuals to join its ranks.
By engaging with the community in innovative ways and showcasing the multifaceted aspects of a career in corrections, CDCR aims to build a strong and dedicated workforce for the future.
