California Institution for Men (CIM) saw 30 incarcerated individuals graduate with associates degrees from Chaffey College. Many graduated with honors, a degree, and multiple certifications. The program takes two years of study, testing, hard work, and determination to see it to its completion. The families of the graduates joined to watch the May 9 ceremony and celebrate their achievements.

Acting Warden Eric Mejia praised the graduates for making positive choices and persevering to reach graduation.
“You chose to invest in yourselves. You faced obstacles, distractions and doubts, but you kept going. You’ve proven change is possible and learning doesn’t stop at a locked door,” Mejia said.

Chaffey College Superintendent Henry Shannon, PhD, praised the CIM students for their hard work.
“You’re remarkable (and) outstanding,” he said. “You’re now Chaffey College panthers.”
Chaffey College Student Government President Corah Miller spoke about the benefits of education.
“Education is the most powerful catalyst for transformation. It provides us with the tools and knowledge to create new, meaningful change in our own lives and perhaps, most remarkably, empowers us to uplift those around us,” she explained.
“CIM would like to congratulate the grads. Your perseverance has paid off and we’re excited to see what you’ll accomplish next,” said organizers. “Congratulations.”
