CSP‑Corcoran walks for Valley Children’s Hospital

CSP-Corcoran executive staff present a check from cancer walks to Valley Children's Hospital in Madera. The hospital's mascot, a giraffe, holds the check.

California State Prison (CSP) Corcoran staff and incarcerated individuals participated in cancer walks to benefit Valley Children’s Hospital.

This marks the second year CSP-Corcoran held cancer walks on Facilities 3A, 3B, and 4B. All donations raised by staff and the incarcerated population went directly to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. In all, staff and the population raised over $10,400 for the effort.

Aside from monetary donations, various custody staff members also donated cancer pins, bracelets, snacks and drinks for the events. These staff donations came from Sgt. P. Rodriguez, Capt. A. Johnson, and Visions Adult School Assistant Principal K. Johnson.

CSP-Corcoran Amity Foundation staff member E. Alvarado donated his time, equipment, and DJ talents at all three cancer walks. His positive, aspirational emcee skills on the microphone and music selection created an uplifting environment.

Computer Related Technology teacher C. Perreira and her students processed trust withdrawals from the incarcerated population. They also printed out a certificate of recognition for each resident, memorializing their participation and monetary donation.

Career Technical Education teacher J. Shubin and his students donated their time and materials to create a wood plaque recognizing Facility 3B for donating nearly $6,400 via trust withdrawals and food sale proceeds.

Staff, incarcerated work together for charity

Acting Warden Silva joined each of the three Cancer Walks, sharing his appreciation to the staff for organizing the event and for the resident donations.

Facility 3B incarcerated residents Eric Estrada and Jesse Herrera, Facility 4B resident Derek Buncom, and Facility 3A resident Jason Harris discussed how cancer has affected their lives.

Raising proceeds for Valley Children’s Hospital has proven to have an impactful impression on all residents.

“I can’t believe how great this Cancer Walk has grown to become,” said Estrada. “I would’ve never imagined we could put together an event where custody, free staff, and residents would walk side by side for such a great cause. It goes to show what we can accomplish together when we all walk for a great cause to eliminate cancer.”

After all tallies were finalized with the outstanding help of the CSP-Corcoran Accounting Office Supervisor Balky Shergill, the grand total of donations raised is $10,740.

The CSP-Corcoran Executive team presented the Valley Children’s Hospital on Friday, May 23.
