California Institution for Men (CIM) in Chino recently held its first ceremony to honor the K-9s who work tirelessly to detect drugs, phones, and other contraband inside prison walls.
The event brought together correctional staff, K-9 handlers, and administrators to celebrate the vital role these dogs and handlers play in ensuring institutional safety.
Specially trained in the detection of narcotics, Suboxone, methamphetamines, and unauthorized electronics, the K-9 units are responsible for uncovering illicit items that pose serious threats to security. Their ability to detect materials hidden in the most unlikely places is often the difference between a quiet day and a dangerous incident.

“These canines are not just tools, they are trusted partners,” said Lt. Ruben Duenas of the Investigative Services Unit. “Their precision and reliability make them essential to our mission.”
The ceremony also included live demonstrations, giving attendees a firsthand look at how these teams train and operate. From sniffing out contraband to conducting surprise sweeps, the K-9 units proved why they are considered a cornerstone of modern correctional security.
CIM leadership confirmed plans to make the event a CIM tradition.
“These dogs earn our respect every single day,” said Warden E. Mejia.
Congratulations to the following officers and their K-9 partners:
- C. Montano & K9 Chase
- B. Carpenter & K9 Astro
- J. Tanori & K9 Cano
- M. Grace & K9 Lincoln
- D. Acosta & K9 Penelope
