Pelican Bay State Prison has announced the passing of Correctional Officer Daniel Read on Dec. 14, 2025.

Read began his career with the department in August 2015.
Following his academy training, he was assigned to Pelican Bay State Prison, where he served with distinction until his passing.
“Officer Daniel Read was a respected and valued member of the Pelican Bay family. Known for his cheerful demeanor, Daniel touched many of our lives with his warm greetings, hugs, genuine smiles, and firm handshakes. His absence will be deeply felt by everyone,” according to the institution. “Pelican Bay State Prison extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Staff members are encouraged to support one another and seek assistance from available resources during this period of mourning, according to the institution.
