Retired correctional officer Robert “Bobby” Deatherage passed away peacefully at home Nov. 27, 2025, following a brief battle with cancer. He worked for the department for more than 23 years.
Deatherage began his career as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt in February 1990. After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer’s Academy, he reported to Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in March 1990.

In June 1993, he transferred to North Kern State Prison. Two years later, he transferred to Valley State Prison where he remained until his retirement in April 2012. After retiring, he spent his time coaching and working for the Chowchilla School District.
“Robert was known for being an amazing friend, dad, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed,” according to the institution.
Details regarding funeral arrangements were not provided.
