Eric Callison, retired correctional officer

Eric Callison, a retired correctional officer from High Desert State Prison in Susanville, passed away Aug. 29, 2026.

He worked for the department for 28 years before retiring in 2024.

Callison began his departmental career in April 1996 as a medical technical assistant (MTA) while undergoing training. Callison then reported to High Desert State Prison in April 1997 as an MTA.

A decade later, he attended the Basic Correctional Officer Academy and reported for duty March 2017 to California Correctional Center in Susanville. He remained at the institution until it was deactivated.

Callison then transferred to California City Correctional Facility in September 2022, then to California Correctional Institution Tehachapi in November 2023. He remained at the institution until retiring in September 2024.

“Eric was an amazing MTA, an incredible partner, and an even better friend. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing or working with Eric knew he was someone you could always count on. He always had your back, no matter what was going on. Also, he never hesitated to stop what he was doing to lend a helping hand to those around him. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to be there for others made a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him,” according to High Desert State Prison. “We would like to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to Eric’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
