Officer Gregory Meeks also volunteered for the Honor Guard.

Meeks started his CDCR career as a cadet in November 1997 at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt.

After graduation, he reported to California State Prison (CSP) Solano in December.

Officer Meeks worked various jobs at the institution, including restricted housing unit, visiting, and medical escort officer. He was a proud and motivated volunteer member of the Honor Guard, participating in a range of events, from celebrations to retirements and funerals.

In 2023, Meeks was awarded Officer of the Year by the Solano Rotary Club.

“Officer Meeks was easily recognized by his bright smile, impeccable style, and his positive demeanor. He was loved and appreciated by all and will be greatly missed. CSP-Solano extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” according to the institution.

Gregory Meeks followed father’s career footsteps

He was a second-generation correctional officer, following in his father’s footsteps.

“The greatest thing was to have my dad pin my badge on my shirt after graduation,” he said.

After his retirement, he reflected on his long career and the mentors who helped him along the way.

“There (are) entirely too many of my colleagues I’d like to thank but just know I appreciate each and every one of you,” Meeks said. “My career was very fulfilling.”

Celebration of life

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 at St. Paul Church, 3996 14th Ave. in Sacramento. Celebration of life will immediately follow at 11 a.m.
