Bishop, faith leaders bring blessings to CHCF

Bishop and priests visit CHCF in Stockton to hold Christmas mass for the population as well as some staff.

Priests and the bishop from the local Diocese brought blessings to California Health Care Facility (CHCF) in late December.

On Dec. 23, Bishop Myron Cotta, along with Fathers Cesar Martinez, Saul Perez, and John Armstead, celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Mass at CHCF in Stockton.

The celebration was further enriched by four schola choir members from various parishes throughout the Diocese. According to those who attended the service, their angelic voices lifted spirits as they sang carols and accompanied the liturgy.

In attendance were 110 incarcerated persons, along with 15 CHCF staff members and security personnel.

During the service, incarcerated person B. Hatfield reflected on the bishop’s message.

“We are often in a prison of our own making, (but faith can) free us from our self-imposed bonds,” he said.

The event ended with a shared meal of tri-tip sandwiches, chips, and beverages. The meal was generously sponsored by Robert Poncini of the Pastoral Office and Martha Arevalos of Catholic Charities, both of whom were present for this meaningful celebration.

A special thank you was also extended to CHCF’s Community Resources Department and Administration, for their support, as well as Sgt. S. Horstmeier for decorating the space.
