CMC officers help driver after truck burst into flames

Two CMC transportation officers helped a driver whose truck burst into flames Jan. 16.

Two correctional officers from California Men’s Colony (CMC) helped a driver after her truck burst into flames on Interstate 5.

While returning from a transport to Northern California on Jan. 16, Officers D. Davis and S. French were traveling southbound when they came upon a fully involved semi-truck.

First on the scene, the officers immediately stopped to help. They ensured the driver was in a safe location away from the vehicle and confirmed emergency services had been notified.

The driver was visibly shaken but did not appear to have any obvious injuries. She told the officers smoke began filling the cab while she was driving. When she pulled onto the shoulder, the smoke quickly turned into flames. She said she had been waving for help as vehicles passed by, but no one stopped.

The semi-truck was engulfed in heavy flames, creating a dangerous situation along the shoulder of Interstate 5.

Officers Davis and French stayed with the driver, helped keep her calm, and made sure she was OK until fire personnel and the California Highway Patrol arrived.

After the fire was extinguished, CHP asked the officers to remain with the driver while traffic was diverted. They agreed, staying with her until her supervisor arrived and picked her up.

“Their actions reflect the professionalism and care our officers bring to the job, even in unexpected and dangerous situations,” according to a statement issued by CMC.
