‘You can do great things’

The industry-recognized certifications equip CALCTRA participants with valuable skills and create pathways to meaningful employment as they prepare to return to their communities.

CALCTRA acting Director Suzie Changus offered words of encouragement to the graduates.

Highlighting the impact of the program were two formerly incarcerated CALCTRA graduates, Robert Castaneda and Louis Frazier. They returned to prison to share their stories of success.

Castaneda graduated from CALCTRA’s optical program and became a licensed optician. He worked for one of the largest prescription eyewear retailers. Castaneda is now an industrial supervisor in CALCTRA’s Optical lab.

“Never limit yourself and have a mindset that you will succeed. Stay focused and true to yourself,” said Castaneda.

Louis Frazier graduated from CALCTRA’s Metal Fabrication and Computer-Aided Design program at FSP. He credits his seven years of job training for helping him find employment when he returned to his community in 2022.

“At my very first interview, I didn’t walk in with a resume. I walked in with my CALCTRA apprenticeship certification. The skills behind that certificate spoke for me, and I walked out that day with a job,” said Frazier.

He now works for Tri Tool Technologies, a global leader in the design of high-performance machine tools.

Frazier closed out the graduation ceremony with, “Every day is a great day, don’t give up.”
