RJD hosts first Black History Month celebration

The first Black History Month Celebration was recently held at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD). The Feb. 27 program created a meaningful space for reflection, education, and artistic expression.

Featuring original spoken word, poetry, an expressive dance performance, and a moving choir presentation, the event highlighted themes of resilience, legacy, and unity. Through creative expression, participants shared their personal journeys, the lives of their ancestors, and the ways history continues to shape and connect communities today.

RJD performers were recognized for their participation, receiving certificates, during the institution's first Black History Month celebration held Feb. 27, 2026.
RJD performers received certificates thanking them for participating in the institution’s first Black History Month celebration held Feb. 27.

The event was inclusive in both attendance and participation, bringing together individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. According to organizers, the atmosphere was one of respect and engagement, as attendees listened, learned, and supported one another’s stories.

While acknowledging the complex history that gives Black History Month its significance, there was a clear sense of dignity and collective appreciation throughout the room.

The celebration marked an important step in fostering cultural awareness and unity within the institution and set the foundation for continued programming to history while strengthening community.
