Louis Rodriguez, correctional food manager II at WSP-RC, is credited with saving a life while he was on vacation.

Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) Correctional Food Manager II Louis Rodriguez is being credited with saving the life of a tour boat passenger.

Rodriguez was on vacation aboard a tour boat July 11 at Lake Arrowhead when a fellow passenger began having a medical emergency.

During the routine boat tour with family and friends, a passenger suddenly collapsed. The passenger’s daughter began yelling for someone to contact emergency services.

Rodriguez, who has extensive CPR training as a former volunteer firefighter in Tulare County, immediately stepped forward to help.

After checking for a pulse and finding none, Rodriguez carefully moved the gentleman onto the deck and began administering CPR. Within minutes, the man began breathing, regained consciousness and soon was able to speak.

Rodriguez continued speaking with him, keeping him alert and stable until the boat reached the dock. San Bernardino County Fire Station 91 was waiting to provide advanced medical care and transport the man to a hospital.

WSP-RC leadership issued the following statement:

“For his swift and courageous response, WSP-RC would like to recognize Louis Rodriguez. Because he did exactly what he was trained to do during an emergency, the passenger is alive today to tell his story. WSP-RC is proud to have employees like him and acknowledge Rodriguez’s exemplary conduct, quick thinking and dedication to public safety both on and off the job.”
