Meet the CDCR K‑9s: Anna provides comfort at Salinas Valley

Anna is unique among the CDCR K-9s, focusing her talents on emotionally supporting staff at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad. She is a certified facility support K-9 donated to CDCR by Guide Dogs of America – Tender Loving Canines.

“Not many institutions are familiar with Anna or the work she performs,” said Correctional Officer Thomas Grady. “My hope is Anna’s success at Salinas Valley State Prison may help demonstrate the value of similar support canines at other institutions.”

While Anna’s role is different within CDCR, she provides a valuable service to the institution and staff.

Paired with Grady in 2024, they spent two weeks in an intensive training program, learning how to support prison staff and the local law enforcement community.

“The relationship between a support K-9 and handler is fundamental to the program’s success,” Grady said. “While our training focused on commands and cues, it also emphasized trust, communication and understanding one another.”

Anna’s support mission

According to Grady, Anna’s primary purpose is to support the mental and emotional wellness of correctional officers and staff working in high-stress environments. She provides calming companionship during difficult days and helps staff decompress following stressful or traumatic incidents.

“After critical incidents, Anna and I respond to staff debriefings following assaults, suicides, major disturbances, lockdowns and other traumatic events,” Grady said. “Anna is simply there and her presence can be incredibly powerful. She also helps break down the stigma around mental health within correctional culture. Officers are accustomed to remaining strong, supporting one another and continuing to perform their duties regardless of what occurred during a shift. As a result, asking for help or discussing emotional stress can sometimes be difficult.”

He said officers who might not walk into an office and ask for help, can find themselves opening up to Anna.

Her work doesn’t stop at the institution’s gate.

“When staff members are injured or require medical treatment following an incident, Anna and I often visit them at the hospital or conduct home visits,” he said. “Her presence allows us to continue supporting staff during their recovery and reminds them that they remain part of our correctional family.”
